- e-tags for domestic poultry
- A few months from now, the broiler chicken bought from the market anywhere in Kerala could come with a digital link to the domestic farm where it was reared, enabling authorities to trace the source of supply.
- The Animal Husbandry department is planning to introduce a tougher food testing regime and a traceability system to ensure food safety. Efforts are on to introduce a certification system for domestic poultry farms, along with QR coding of live chicken to identify the farm of origin. The certification will be based on periodic testing of random samples.
- Globally, traceability is emerging as a key factor in food safety. The system lets authorities trace a risk back to its source, helping them prevent contaminated products from reaching consumers.
- The latest technological tools make it possible to extend traceability from the farm of origin to previous generations of breeding stock. The department will geotag locations to monitor homestead and commercial poultry production in the State. Moves are on to modernise the laboratories under the department and equip them for detection of antibiotic, pesticide and chemical contamination, a major issue in poultry and meat produce. The State Laboratory for Livestock, Marine and Agri Products at Marad, Ernakulam has been accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories.
