Forest department sends proposal to Kerala govt for setting up elephant sanctuary
The forest department has sent a detailed proposal to the government to set up a wild elephant sanctuary in Chinnakkanal-Anayirankal area near Munnar.
The sanctuary will have a total area of 1,600 hectares.
One main objective of setting up the sanctuary is to provide smooth passage for the elephants. If they are provided a safe place they will not enter human habitations and it will prevent man-animal conflicts in the region. As per estimates, there are around 38-40 wild elephants in the Chinnakkanal -Anayirangal region.
It was in 2002-2003 that the then government headed by AK Antony provided land for the settlements at Sinakukandam, 301 Colony and 80 Acre areas near Munnar.
