- Ernakulam region to tone up milk production
- The Kunnukara milk cooperative in Chengamanad lost 38 cows, 17 heifers and one buffalo that belonged to their pouring farmers. This was apart from eight cowsheds that were completely washed away and the damage to property and equipment their two collection centres suffered.
- Another 250 litres of fresh milk was being sold locally as it fetches them more revenue – Rs 50/ litre – as opposed to Rs 32 – offered by the union.
- Kunnukara cooperative is now limping back to normal and has been able to produce around 350 litres per day but it is selling the bulk of it – 200 litres – locally and providing only 150 litres to union.
- It procures 3,10,000 litres per day from around 900 functional milk cooperatives but has a daily sale of 3,25,000 litres. The shortage is met by milk from Malabar Regional Cooperative Milk Producers Union (MRCMPU), which has surplus production.
- Milk production has two peaks every year—June, July & November, December—when the grass is green after the rains. The per day production reaches 3,30,000 litres to 3,40,000 litres in these months. But the union finds the milk short when Kerala celebrates Onam and Vishu and they buy from cooperative counterparts like Nandini in Karnataka and Aavin in Tamil Nadu. The shortage is also met with use of skimmed milk powder (SMP) purchased by them.
